Overview

General Surgeons are Medical Specialists in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) providing trauma and general surgical care for CAF members in Canadian Forces Health Services Clinics, operating theatres, and overseas during peacekeeping or humanitarian missions. They can lead within CAF Health Services, mentor and educate other Health Services personnel, including Medical Officers, Nursing Officers, Physician Assistants, and technicians.

Responsibilities

• Provide surgical consultation to CAF members in Canada and internationally.
• Lead surgical or emergent care teams caring for injured and ill patients in Canada and in deployed settings.
• Educate and advise multidisciplinary teams on trauma and general surgery care.
• Maintain surgical skills by holding a position within a civilian health care facility.
• Contribute to the development and application of health care policies within the CAF.
